When it comes to road trips there are three non-negotiables. Firstly, you need solid wheels to get you from A-Z (that’s where Thrifty can help), secondly, a cracking playlist to keep everyone entertained, and thirdly, snacks.

There’s no doubt snacks can save the day during a long drive, but the key is to be prepared so you can avoid pulling over at every burger joint along the way.

There’s certainly no shortage of options when it comes to road trip snacks, so we want to help provide you some healthy options for everyone to enjoy!

What to look for in a snack

We’ve pretty much gotten road trip snacking down to a science, and after much trial and error, we can safely say that there are 3 requirements to follow: follows:

  1. Simple – it’s got to be an easy to make, easily eaten snack to avoid messiness and spillage (in other words, avoid yoghurt or foods that require cutlery). Bonus points if you can eat it with one hand
  2. Healthy – Because when you’re sitting in the car on a long road trip, you really ought to be eating right. Junk food will only make you feel sluggish. Some nice, healthy snacks will provide the whole car with good energy levels.
  3. Hydrating – Staying hydrated often gets overlooked during road trips. A lot of the time, being thirsty feels a lot like being hungry, so make sure to not only pack a sufficient supply of water but opt for hydrating snacks too. Pack an esky to keep these cool (though be sure to incorporate toilet breaks into your route).

Which snacks to choose?

Now that we’ve established the requirements of road trip snacks, here’s a list of the best snacks that are healthy, delicious and can be enjoyed by the whole family.

Nuts are a great option because they’re packed with nutrients and protein which means they’ll keep you fuller, for longer. Here’s the other great thing about them – there is so much variety! If you don’t like almonds, try some walnuts, cashews or pistachios instead. Then there are your roasted sorts, activated or simply raw. Whichever way you like them – make sure you pack some. Our tip is to stay away from the glazed ones, as these usually have a pretty high sugar content.

Kale Chips

Ditch the potato chips for some healthy kale chips. These are super easy to prepare and are packed with nutritional benefits certainly not found in any packet of potato chips. To prepare simply shred kale leaves into bite-sized chunks, pour a little olive oil and sprinkle generously with sea salt, then pop them into the oven at 160 degrees for 20 minutes. Let them cool off before packing them into a zip-lock bag or some Tupperware and enjoy this savoury snack without any guilt.

Fruit kebabs

There’s no formula for this easy snack. Simply grab a skewer and load it with any fruit you like. From experience, strawberries, banana, grapes, and rockmelon are all solid fruits that will stay on the skewer until they’re devoured by a road tripper.

Easy to find in any Coles or Woolies (which can often be found near a Thrifty car hire location), and available in snack size portions. Popcorn is a favourite among road-tripping families,  although it can be tempting to go for the buttery kind, try to opt for lightly salted options. If you’re making it at home, why not throw a few spices or herbs for a bit of extra flavour?
